Students’ Experiences Using Digital Language Platforms to Develop Intercultural Competence

Abstract:
This study explores students’ experiences using language learning digital platforms and their impact on intercultural competence. Analysis of the results obtained from a focus group consisting of students learning English, Spanish, and French at Singidunum University indicate that digital platforms provide authentic, contextualized content further enhancing their understanding of cultural practices, traditions, communication styles, and daily life in target-language communities. Participants emphasized that videos, podcasts, interactive exercises, and social media provided them with opportunities to observe language in real contexts, fostering awareness of cultural differences, social norms, and humor, while improving communication skills and confidence in intercultural interactions. Students also highlighted the motivational and engaging aspects of digital platforms, including personalized learning, gamification, and flexible access, which complement traditional classroom instruction. These findings indicate that integrating digital platforms into language education supports both linguistic development and intercultural competence, suggesting pedagogical strategies that combine authentic materials with structured teaching to enrich learning experiences and cultural understanding.
