Open Source Technologies in Geographic Information Systems

Abstract:
During the last decade, a growing number of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects have been established to focus on the development of several types of software for geographic data collection, storage, analysis and visualization. Because GIS technologies are increasingly present in different applications, it is necessary to divide the existing software projects into categories based on the functions, they perform. The goal of this paper is to present an overview of mature free and Open Source software GIS Desktop software projects with their characteristics.
